Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting: Classification of EPA Ocular Irritants and Non-Irritants by the OptiSafe™ Test Method of Mixtures

Overview

Most real-world products are not pure chemicals, they are mixtures. This abstract demonstrates that OptiSafe™ can accurately classify chemical mixtures under the EPA eye irritation system, not just single-ingredient substances. The EPA classification system (Toxicity Categories I–IV) is used for pesticide products, industrial chemicals, and other substances regulated under FIFRA and OSHA HazCom. By showing that OptiSafe™ performs well on mixtures, this work expands the practical applicability of the method to the complex formulations that most manufacturers actually need to classify.

Abstract

The EPA eye irritation classification system is routinely used to categorize ocular toxicity for pesticide products and industrial chemicals regulated under FIFRA and OSHA HazCom. Classification into EPA Toxicity Categories I through IV determines labeling requirements, including the "DANGER," "WARNING," and "CAUTION" signal words on product labels. Most products requiring EPA eye irritation classification are formulated mixtures rather than pure chemicals. This abstract presents OptiSafe™ classification results for a panel of chemical mixtures with established EPA eye irritation classifications derived from in vivo Draize test data. The mixtures spanned all four EPA toxicity categories and included surfactant-based formulations, solvent blends, and aqueous solutions. OptiSafe™ correctly classified the majority of mixtures across all four categories, demonstrating its applicability to the complex formulations encountered in real-world regulatory testing. The results support the use of OptiSafe™ as a nonanimal alternative for EPA eye irritation classification of formulated products.
